Pei-Si Lai, CEO of GXBank, recently shared that they are considering launching a web version of their digital bank. This came up during a Q&A session following the bank’s first anniversary event yesterday.
Since opening last year, GXBank has been operating exclusively through its mobile app, available on both iOS and Android. This app-only system is common among other digital banks like Bank Islam’s Be U, Aeon Bank, and Boost Bank.
While being mobile-only makes it convenient for users to access banking services anytime and anywhere, there are some downsides. Just recently, some customers couldn’t log in to their accounts because their smartphones were using outdated firmware that GXBank no longer supports.
In response to these complaints, GXBank explained that they need to prioritize security and performance to meet regulations. So, they can’t support outdated firmware anymore, meaning users may need to upgrade their devices. Lai emphasized this point during the Q&A session.
This situation can be tough for customers who can’t afford to upgrade their phones. A possible solution might be a web-based banking option, similar to what traditional banks like Maybank and CIMB offer. This would allow customers to access their accounts via a browser rather than relying solely on the app. While GXBank has a website, it currently only provides information about their services and doesn’t support online banking.
Lai mentioned that while a web version is under consideration, it won’t be rolled out anytime soon. Right now, GXBank is busy launching new products that were announced during their anniversary celebration.
When we asked about the possibility of adding Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay support for their debit card, Lai confirmed they’re looking into it. However, it might take a while before customers can link their cards to these payment methods.
