Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke, recently expressed his frustration over the delays in the completion of KLIA’s Automated People Mover System (Aerotrain). Originally set to be finished by January 31, 2025, it seems like that timeline is no longer realistic, according to recent inspections.

Loke noted that the contractor hasn’t provided a new completion date, which has only added to his dissatisfaction. The trains that have arrived are still undergoing tests, and there’s no clear indication of when they’ll be ready for the public to use.

Just to recap, MAHB had awarded Pestech International the contract to upgrade and maintain the Aerotrain for ten years back in 2021. This system had been running since 1998, so it was definitely due for a refresh. Unfortunately, in March 2023, service was paused due to mechanical and electronic mishaps, leading to Pestech’s initial contract termination for underperformance.

However, in a surprising turn, Pestech was reappointed in January 2024 with a new, rushed timeline. Last September, two sets of trains from China made their arrival in Malaysia, moving straight into the installation, followed by inspection phases.
